BATTLE CREEK KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek’s SAFE Place, a shelter for the victims of domestic violence, was not safe at all for a while yesterday afternoon and had to be evacuated.
Investigators say a construction worker, removing paint from a window frame with a heat gun set, the place on fire.
The flames reportedly got into the walls near the window in an entryway.
Fire crews were dispatched at about 1:30 pm and were able to quickly douse the flames and minimize the damage.
After the place was ventilated and determined to be a SAFE place again, the staff and the women and children staying there were allowed back in.
