LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Majority Republicans in the Michigan Senate are expected to announce details on their plan to reform the state’s no-fault auto insurance system later this week.
There have been several unsuccessful attempts by lawmakers over the years to make changes to bring down the nation’s highest premiums.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey says it’s a misnomer to think they will be reducing rates. Instead, they want to give Michigan drivers some choices.
Michigan’s no fault insurance law goes back to the 1970’s.
Shirkey says while the law is not illegal, it was poorly written.
He says along with fixing roads, the auto insurance issue is the top concern for voters.
