LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice may now be the front runner to become the next State Superintendent of Schools.
His most formidable opponent for the job, Brenda Cassellius of Minnesota has dropped out, after she was offered the job of Superintendent of Boston’s school system.
The State Board has offered Randy Leipa, the Superintendent of the Wayne County Intermediate School District, a chance to replace Cassellius in the final interviews.
That means Dr. Rice, Leipa and Ann Arbor Superintendent Jeanice Swift are still in the running.
Rice was the only candidate who made a favorable impression with all of the trustees in the first round of interviews but that could change when they do a deeper dive on Tuesday.
