LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Voters won’t have to wait until 2020 to see elections change in Michigan.
Next Tuesday is the first Election Day since voters approved the “Promote the Vote” ballot proposal last November.
For the first time no-excuse absentee balloting will be allowed for everyone, and those who have never voted before, or just moved will have more options to get registered, right up to voting day.
Citizens will also see the return of straight-party voting, or at least they would if there were any candidates to elect.
May ballots usually only feature non-partisan school and municipal funding questions.
In fact in Kalamazoo County, most people won’t get the chance to vote or take advantage of their new rights. Only Comstock Schools and the Climax-Scotts School district have funding issues to decide next week.
Most voters in Calhoun County also won’t get to try out their new voter rights until a later election. There are road funding proposals on the ballot in Emmett and Leroy Townships and Burlington Village voters will decide a local funding issue.
All other voters will get the day off.
Most clerks view May 7 as a rehearsal for the larger elections ahead.
