KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety has just signed on to a cell phone app that they are calling the “virtual neighborhood watch”.
Neighbors by Ring links social media and special doorbell camera technology to neighbors and now Public Safety is monitoring and contributing, reacting to crime in real time to catch “porch pirates” and other bad guys in the act.
Some Kalamazoo Neighborhoods are already using it.
Assistant Chief David Boysen says fighting crime is community effort and this is a very useful tool to keep neighborhoods involved in watching out for their neighbors.
800 residents have the Ring Cameras so far, but you don’t have to have one to sign up for the app and receive information from neighbors and Public Safety.
Anyone with a cell phone can download the app for free by texting “Staysafe” to 555888.
