KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s City Attorney is recommending that Commissioners declare a yearlong moratorium on allowing recreational marijuana businesses in the City.
Clyde Robinson says there are just too many unknowns and too much risk. They thought they would have until later this year to decide but he says that may not be the case.
His sources tell him emergency rules could be out in a month and the state could begin accepting applications by September. He says towns that don’t opt out by then could have limited options.
Attorney Devon Loker, who specializes in Marijuana law, says the state’s emergency rules should clear away a lot of smoke.
He thinks what the Commissioners need is public input.
Commissioners seem to be well aware that 60% of the community’s voters backed the marijuana initiative last fall and they are inclined to allow recreational marijuana businesses in the city, but Mayor Bobby Hopewell agrees with Robinson that they do it properly.
Whether that will take a year remains open for debate.
