KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — There have been a few orange cones visable this spring, but the real serious construction work has just begun. Overnight on U.S. 131 the first of several large construction projects got underway.
MDOT’s Nick Schirripa says they plan to spend nearly $6-million dollars fixing joints, improving shoulders and resurfacing 11-miles of the divided highway from West Main in Kalamazoo all the way to Milham in Portage.
He says the work will mostly be done at night, to minimize the impact on traffic flow.
The project should be completed by midsummer.
Construction work will begin in Portage today, replacing water mains, creating barrier free sidewalks and resurfacing Romence Road from Oakland Drive to Constitution Boulevard. They plan to detour traffic around the construction, which won’t be completed until late July.
