MATTAWAN (WKZO AM/FM) — The Mattawan School District is cracking down on the fastest rising substance abuse problem in the country…vaping. Local studies show that teen use of the electric cigarettes increased by double digits in the last year to 43%.
It’s become such a problem that legislation has been proposed in Lansing banning teens from using them. The U.S. Surgeon General is threatening to ban them from the market if the statistics continue to climb.
Mattawan students found loitering and congregating in bathrooms and locker rooms may be sent to the office to be searched. Access to parking lots during the school day will be restricted.
Superintendent Tim Eastman says in a letter sent to parents that access to nicotine delivery systems in school is already banned in the Student Handbook and can result in suspension.
Possession of devices that deliver a hit of THC can result in criminal charges.
