BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — A 37-year-old from Galesburg who claimed he walked from Kalamazoo into the lobby of the McCamley Plaza Hotel in Battle Creek just after midnight Monday, is staying instead at the Calhoun County Corrections Center after the clerk feared he planned to kidnap her.
Police say she felt that Kenneth Bastian was planning to kidnap her, spoke incoherently and refused to let her out of his sight for several hours. She eventually was able to slip a note to a new guest to call 911 to summon police.
They say Bastion tried to flee but was hit with a stun gun.
They claimed he shook off the effects and grabbed the device, just as other officers arrived, stunned him again and was able to get him in cuffs.
He is currently charged with disarming a police officer and resisting and could face additional counts.
He is a repeat offender but also has a history of mental issues.
