BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek fire officials say careless smoking was most likely the cause of a house fire that killed one of the family’s dogs.
It broke out just before 6 p.m. Tuesday at a single-family home in the 500-block of Orleans Avenue.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy flames on the front porch which were difficult to extinguish because of the high winds and downed electrical lines in the front yard.
A neighbor, who was watching the house while the owner was out of town, was able to get 3 dogs out of the house and officials rescued 2 cats, but 1 dog did not survive.
Investigators say the fire may have started on the front porch from discarded smoking materials.
