PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer made several stops during her afternoon in Portage yesterday, starting with a book reading at Portage’s 12th Street Elementary School.
Then she held a brief meeting with local legislators and a town hall meeting to once again pitch her budget plan. Whitmer explained how the proposed 45-cent hike in gas taxes frees up funding to solve a lot of other issues, like education and tap water contamination.
She made it clear she doesn’t want to impose the big gas tax hike but says until someone comes along with a better plan, it is what it will take to fix Michigan’s neglected roads.
So far Republican leaders say their plans won’t be out until this summer, and some say it may take them longer than that.
