LANSING, MI (WTVB) – While much of the focus in trying to provide savings for drivers has been on auto insurance rates, 58th District State Representative Eric Leutheuser of Hillsdale this week introduced legislation to give Michigan drivers financial relief by creating a flat rate registration fee for cars that are 15 years old or more.
“Lowering the registration fee for these older vehicles that are still roadworthy will give financial relief to Michigan drivers who need it most,” said Leutheuser, of Hillsdale. “It’s an idea that should be included in the larger discussion happening on road funding.”
According to Leutheuser, under current Michigan law, many drivers with older vehicles face registration fees that may be higher than necessary because the fee is based on their vehicle’s original sticker price.
Leutheuser’s plan lowers registration fees on cars that are 15 years old and older to a flat rate of $100. If a vehicle that age already has a registration fee lower than $100, the lowest number would apply.
House Bill 4424 has been referred to the Transportation Committee.
