TEXAS TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Homeowners around Crooked Lake and Eagle Lake in Texas Township are becoming increasingly concerned as water levels continue to rise and more homes are being abandoned due to flooding.
The latest obstacle to a plan to pump water out of the lakes is the DEQ’s requirement that they filter the water to keep zebra mussel larvae from entering pristine Bass Lake downstream.
Superintendent Julie Vanderweire says they will have to go all the way to Israel and pay $300,000 for the screen with fine enough mesh to do the job.
They are asking the DEQ to waive the requirement to allow pumping before the screens arrive, because of the rising waters.
The Task Force met Thursday and discussed their options.
