ST JOSEPH (WKZO AM/FM)– It was a crime of opportunity…an ambulance crew from Three Oaks stopped for lunch at Panera in St. Joseph.
A man jumped into their ambulance and made a run for the border, heading west on I-94. He nearly made it.
An officer spotted the ambulance and the chase began, racing from police at 90 mph until officers were able to deploy stop sticks and blow out one of his tires.
The 35-year-old suspect pulled into a parking lot near New Buffalo and tried to flee on foot, but was chased down, arrested, and booked into the Berrien County Jail.
The operators of Three Oaks’ volunteer Ambulance service fixed the tire and put the vehicle back into service, glad that no one was hurt, and the ambulance wasn’t wrecked.
