LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is on record now, supporting plans by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to install devices in Illinois that would keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes, but she is concerned about the rising cost of the project.
The plan is to build water flushing, noise-making and electrification systems into the Brandon Road Lock and Dam that would keep the voracious invasive species from passing through.
They have apparently found a tone that drives the fish away.
The Engineers are preparing a report to Congress and a number of officials were asked for comments.
Whitmer says she would like to see an effort made to cut costs after the estimated price tag for the project jumped from $275-million to $778-million in just two years.
