ALLEGAN COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County Sheriff’s officials have disclosed that deputies responded to a fatal, multi-vehicle crasah on M-89 at Second Street in Gun Plains Township that happened at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Witnesses told police they saw an eastbound vehicle on M89 attempting to pass other eastbound vehciles near Sixth Street, but the passing vehicle strayed into the westbound lanes.
Near Second Street a line of westbound vehicles attempted to avoid the eastbound car, but only the first westbound car succeeded.
The second westbound vehicle got sideswiped and went into a ditch. The third westbound vehicle, unable to avoid the eastbound one, collided with it, police said.
An Allegan County Sheriff’s deputy and Plainwell police officer found the at-fault driver’s injuries to be fata.
The driver’s child, secured in a booster seat, was pinned into the backseat and received multiple injuries, none of which appeared to be life threatening, according to police.
The dead driver is identified as 25-year-old Benton Harbor resident Kalyn Ann Cole, police said.
All the people in the westbound vehicles experienced non-life-threatening injuries, some minor, police said.
Assisting at the scene: Plainwell EMS, Gun Plains Fire Department, Otsego Fire Department, Michigan State Police and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Victims Services.
The crash remains under investigation.
