PAW PAW (WKZO AM/FM) — A former Mattawan police officer charged with reckless discharge of a firearm has been found not guilty by a Van Buren County Jury after a two day trial.
While it appeared that Chelsey Omilian was no longer in danger when she opened fire on a fleeing Chevy, believed at the time to be stolen.
But the Jury Foreman says they weren’t convinced that the officer had any malice in her heart when she opened fire.
The Defense also argued that because the driver was a fleeing felon, and was believed to be armed, that the shooting was justified.
It turned out there was no gun and the only person wounded was a woman in the back seat who was never charged with anything.
Omilian claims vindication but says her career in law enforcement is over. She says she wants to study to become a lawyer now.
