HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A man once considered one of Holland’s most-wanted is back in police custody after a gun-related incident this morning in the parking lot of the Baymont Inn & Suites, 680 E. 24th St., in Holland.
Demetrio Flores III, 25, is in Ottawa County Jail, on suspicion of being involved in a Jan. 15 shooting at the Ottogan Estates Park, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett. Flores had been living in Holland Township, Bennett said.
Eight years ago this month, in 2011, Flores was extradited back to Michigan from Florida, to face charges of attempted murder and related felony firearms and gang-involvement charges. In one incident related to those charges, Flores was accused of wounding a passerby during a drive-by shooting on the 400 block of 20th Street in Holland
While serving more than five years in Michigan’s prison system for those charges, Flores was found in 2014 to be armed with a weapon and was sentenced in 2015 to more than 2 additional years behind bars on that charge.
State records indicate that as of Jan. 3, 2019, he was listed as an absconder from parole.
Flores faces a series of felony charges related to that incident: assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, felon in possession of a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and first-degree home invasion, Bennett said.
Flores is believed to have boken into the shooting victim’s home on Jan. 15, shooting the victim in the abdomen, Bennett said. The victim was treated and released from the hospital, Bennett said. Holland police officers were responding to an unrelated incident near 24th Street and Waverly when they encountered Flores, who was taken into custody without incident, Bennett said. Flores is due in court today for arraignment on the felony charges.
