VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — A Benton Harbor man is being held on half a million dollars bond for a misdemeanor charge in Van Buren County, but it’s a little more complicated than that.
23-year-old Jose Humberto Canedo was driving a Chevy SUV early on January 12th when deputies say he crossed the centerline on Red Arrow Highway and slammed head-on into a Jeep, killing two.
Investigators say alcohol was a factor.
73-year-old Mary Ann Fender of Paw Paw and a 6-year-old riding in his vehicle, Skylinn Salinas died from their injuries.
A passenger in the Jeep and a 1-year-old in his own vehicle survived the wreck, and are now in stable condition.
Canedo has been arrested for missing a court date on a previous drunk driving arrest, but it’s just a holding charge.
Unless he can produce $500,000 for bail he will be kept in jail until an investigation file can be delivered to the Prosecutor for consideration of additional charges.
