KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — City Utilities Director James Baker says that the extreme cold not only can result in main breaks, it could also freeze residential water services that run between the city water mains and your home.
He has recommended that homeowners begin running a small trickle of water again to keep waterlines from freezing at the meters, which are usually closer to the surface than underground water services.
He says this is particularly important if you have had lines freeze before.
Symptoms to look for when your pipes or meter may be freezing:
You may experience a slight decrease in water pressure.
Your water may become rusty or cloudy.
Your water will be extremely cold (less than 35 degrees).
They say if your line freezes, it could take them up to three weeks for the city to get a crew to renew your service.
They have a number you can call if you need help or more information. It’s their Public Services Dispatch water emergency line at 269-337-8148.
