DETROIT (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer toured the North American International Auto Show yesterday and announced the four final grants from the Michigan Mobility Challenge.
Nearly $2.2-million will be spent creating an autonomous electric shuttle that will extend the hours of service to veterans at the V.A. Hospital in Battle Creek.
The Grand Rapids Transit system will get over $370,000 to develop a new phone app that will help streamline services for the elderly and disabled who depend on paratransit services.
“We have an opportunity, and a responsibility, to advance our state’s technology and automotive landscape in a way that also improves the quality of life for countless individuals in Michigan,” said Gov. Whitmer. “The Michigan Mobility Challenge can offer a blueprint for the rest of the nation on how to look to mobility technology to improve transportation options for citizens who need access to an affordable, reliable way to go to the bank, their doctor’s appointment or the grocery store.”
Two other projects for SouthEast Paratransit services and ride-sharing in the U.P. were also announced.
That brings the total number of projects funded by the $8-million dollar Mobility Challenge to 13. They hope they will all serve as models as technology changes global transportation.
