BERRIEN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — One of two people being held for the New Year’s Eve murder of a soldier who came home for the holidays in St. Joseph Township appears to be his wife and mother of their child.
Army Specialist Kemia Hassel was booked into the Berrien County Jail on Saturday on homicide and felony gun charges. She is expected to be formally arraigned on Monday.
Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III was reportedly taking a plate of food from a New Year’s Eve party at a neighbor’s home to his wife at their place, when he was gunned down in the 2,000 block of Colfax Avenue.
Hassel apparently met his wife in the military and married her this past year.
Township Police say they got the tip they have been hoping for on Friday. That led them to the two suspects, who are being held in the Berrien County Jail until arraignment on Monday.
More details about the investigation may be released at that time.
It came as a surprise to his family, who buried Sgt. Hassel on Saturday.
