LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Customers of one of Michigan’s largest utilities will have to budget more money for electricity in 2019.
The Michigan Public Service Commission on Wednesday approved a rate increase settlement agreement for Consumers Energy. The deal that would slice 24 million dollars in rates and eliminate a 123 million-dollar Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Credit A rate reduction would result in a net 99 million-dollar rate increase. In a statement, the MPSC said that, “A residential customer who uses 500 kilowatt hours of electricity a month will see their monthly bill increase by $1.62.”
In addition, Consumers has pledged to spend at least 200 million dollars annually on its electric distribution reliability capital program, 53 million annually on plant and tree maintenance around distribution lines, and launch a three-year, 10 million-dollar initiative to support Michigan’s electric vehicle market through new rates, rebates and customer education.
