KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — New Year’s arrived twice in Kalamazoo last night as the big digital clock display at City Hall and the ball drop seemed to be about a minute and a half behind the time when cell phones said that 2019 arrived.
Apparently whoever was in charge of the fireworks had a cell phone because they got it right, and started lighting fuses while the ball was just starting to drop and the crowd was still waiting to start the countdown a couple of blocks away, focused on the big clock projected onto a screen in front of City Hall.
We don’t know if it is a portend of strange times continuing, a signal that our collective timing is off, or more likely just a human error but it didn’t keep the crowd from yelling “Happy New Year” with gusto when the clock on the screen and the crowd counted down to Zero.
It may have taken a little longer in Kalamazoo but 2019 has finally arrived.
