PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) –The City of Portage wants you to know that contrary to earlier reports, they are PFAS free, or at least their water system is.
Tests on Portage’s 21 well fields conducted as part of the State testing program for the industrial chemical had positive hits on two city wells, both readings were well below the 70-parts-per-trillion standard set by the EPA.
One tested at 17ppt and the other at just 3ppt, but as a precaution, the wells were taken off line.
City Manager Larry Schaffer says they commissioned their own tests, and the results showed they were clean.
They suspect the initial tests were mistaken, that the test samples may have been compromised in some way.
He says both wells have been put back on line for regular use.
Shaffer says those wells are high quality sources with less iron, and good for the system.
He says they have instituted a much more rigorous and regular schedule of testing for PFAS and other contaminants to assure the system is safe.
