HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga brushed off suggestions that President Donald Trump may be damaged by the sentencing of lawyer Michael Cohen for campaign finance violations and the admisstion by National Enquirer’s parent company AMI’s CEO, David Pecker, that he used hush money to hide stories that might have damaged the campaign.
Huizenga said there’s a simple lesson to be learned from Cohen’s sentencing:
“Don’t lie. Don’t lie to the FBI, don’t lie to other law enforcement,” he said.
Huizenga said an impeachment effort would distract the nation from greater issues.
As to whether Rep. Nancy Pelosi would win her bid to be the next Speaker of the House, Huizenga called her a survivor, adding that “nobody counts votes like she does,” but that it’s unclear whether she has enough votes to win the job.
Lawmakers have been told they are on notice to return to D.C., with a vote on government funding set for Dec. 21 — if it doesn’t pass, the federal government will shut down. He said getting the bill passed depends on compromises being made, though he did not specify what would be appropriate compromise points. He said a shutdown would be foolish, which may have been a indirect criticism of President Trump’s statement earlier this week that he would like to shut it down.
Huizenga said he was headed back to Michigan Thursday, but anticipated being back at work on on Dec. 21 and posibly right up until Dec. 24. and then returning for sessions between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
