LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A strange polio-like disease that has affected 134 people, mostly children in 33 states this year has now appeared for the first time in Michigan, in a child in Wayne County.
Michigan Health officials say they got the confirmation from the CDC late yesterday, and they have 7 other cases that are still being tested.
CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield tells CBS that they are still trying to figure out what causes Acute Flaccid Myelitis, or AFM.
It first appears as a flu-like infection and after a few days, trouble swallowing, muscle paralysis and weakened reflexes follow. There are no known treatments.
Chances of getting it are about one in a million.
