BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Add another mission to the growing list of operations that are located at the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base.
It has just been announced that it will be the new home of a Joint Task Force headquarters.
The unit will be activated during a military crisis or humanitarian relief scenario to provide operational planning for the Air Force, bringing an assortment of specialists to the table. It will mean 34 new jobs at the base.
They plan to begin rounding up the manpower and getting organized immediately.
The Base on Dickman Road at Kellogg Field narrowly escaped being shut down by the Pentagon in 2005.
Since then it has added an operational command center for European and African operations, a location for the remote operation of military drones, and a cyber-defense center to its capabilities, more or less assuring it will remain open, for now.
Fort Custer is still one of three bases being considered for a launch site for 60 intercontinental ballistic missiles that would knock down missiles headed toward the U.S.
