MICHIGAN (WHTC-AM/FM) — State Rep. Jim Lilly has introduced two bills to the House Regulatory Reform Committee, HB 5939 and HB 5941.
One would give municipalities more control of when fireworks can be used in cities, villages and townships, increases requirements for fireworks sellers, and raise fines from $500 to $1,000.
“I think it’d be fair to say that a return to local control is a critical part of this bill package,” he said in an audio clip emailed to media. “At the end of the day, I’ve heard from a lot of my constituents that there’s some tweaks to this legislation that’s seven years old that could be made and I’m happy to see that a majority of groups involved this this have been willing to come together and make some compromises.”
The Park Township Republican’s second bill would give the governor the right to prohibit using consumer fireworks in one or more counties on any given day if weather conditions would make fireworks dangerous to people and property. But the bill also bars a fire officials from doing so.
