LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State residents have paid a dime deposit on every bottle of pop and beer since 1976, but a southeast Michigan state representative says the law is outdated and is hurting overall recycling efforts for everything else.
Representative Joe Bellino has bills to eliminate the deposit law at the end of 2022, saying the bottles and cans represent less than 13-percent of what can be recycled.
The Republican from Monroe says the opposition to his idea is coming from people currently making a lot of money returning the aluminum cans. He adds while Michigan residents do a great job recycling those to get their money back, we’re far behind the rest of the country on everything else.
