HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Community Action House announced 2,898 individuals received 854 gift food baskets across two days ahead of the Thanksgivng 2018, complete with whole turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and ingredients to prepare sides.
“I love this place. It’s the best that we’ve got in Holland. I would be hard hit if it wasn’t for these programs.” said Scott Rice, an individual who visited CAH on Monday morning to pick up a basket.
CAH received about 700 pre-registrations for the Baskets this year – a 20-percent increase from 2017, signaling that the effects of an improving economy have not led to an increase in access to a stable supply of food for many local families. CAH was prepared with more than 10 tons of food for up to 900 baskets across the two-day distribution to meet the continued food security needs of the community, thanks in large part to donations from local schools, businesses, and faith communities and support from the Meijer Simply Give program.
For the first time, CAH offered gluten-free options for certain items to for those with dietary restrictions. In addition to the baskets, winter coats, scarves, hats, and gloves, children’s books, and infant formula were made available for families, meeting a critical need as the region enters the winter season.
“This is one of my favorite things to volunteer for. I feel I can connect with people in the community, and be a positive force when people may not be feeling their best, may not in the best position in life – and I can spread a little hope and cheer.” said Lisa Bradburn, one of dozens of volunteers who spent the day assembling and distributing baskets. “This program is important because it provides a meal in the home for Thanksgiving,” said Jenn Boerman, Associate Director of Community Action House. “It is crucial that all of our neighbors have the choice to eat together, cook together, and be together, regardless of their financial situation.”
