UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — We have seen snow and cold already this winter but forecasters say the first serious snow storm is just about to hit the region towards the end of what is the busiest travel day of the year.
Thanksgiving holiday travelers tend to leave on different days when they take off for the holiday, but most of them come home on Sunday.
If they live anywhere between Chicago and Detroit, they are being told to leave before this evening, if they want to avoid the snow.
The Storm system is currently dumping snow on the Rocky Mountain region, spreading from the central Plains to Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, causing travel headaches there.
Most of Sunday evening’s flights and some on Monday out of O’Hare to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International have already been grounded, and that means flights out of Kalamazoo will also be cancelled.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory beginning at Midnight Sunday 1pm on Monday.
Forecast models show that the strip of counties from Van Buren to Kalamazoo to Calhoun could get rain late today turning to heavy snow with as much as 6 to 9 inches of snow from this storm when it finally blows through Monday afternoon.
The morning commute could be a white nightmare with a heavy wet snowfall, low visibility and glazed-over roads.
