PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — A faulty dehumidifier is being blamed for sparking a smoky fire in a home just to the west of Oakland Drive in Portage early this morning.
Fire crews were dispatched at 2:21 this morning to a home at 6605 Westshire St.
The first crew on the scene encountered heavy smoke coming from the basement and were able to contain the flames to the cellar.
Dehumidiifiers have become a popular appliance in many area basements because of the unusually wet weather we have been having this year.
There was smoke damage throughout the home, but no injuries.
They estimate the damage at $10,000.
