UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — A winter-weather advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday for a majority of the counties across West and Southwest Michigan including Van Buren, Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties.
Forecasters say we could see 3 to 5 inches of slushy snow through the weekend, and that means trouble on the roads.
Michigan State Police Lieutenant Ken High says that first snowfall always catches some drivers off guard and no matter how skilled you are behind the wheel, it takes a different set of skills to drive on slippery surfaces.
Susan Hiltz at AAA says leave plenty of time so you don’t feel rushed, don’t crowd the plow, slow down on slick surfaces, and be cautious and alert no matter how much snow there is.

Despite the advice, police and tow truck drivers know it’s going to be a busy day handling fender benders if the forecasters got it right.
In fact, the first snowfall of last year caused a 32-car pileup on I-94 near Paw Paw along with many other crashes across West Michigan.
Police hope cautious drivers can prevent this from happening again.
