LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Senator Mike Shirkey of Clark Lake will take over as the Michigan Senate majority leader on January 1, 2019. He was elected by the Republican caucus yesterday to the leadership position and will succeed Senator Arlan Meekhof, who is term-limited.
In a statement, Shirkey says he’s looking forward to building a relationship with Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer, who this week pledged to find common ground with the Republican majority in both the House and Senate.
Democratic Senator Jim Ananich of Flint has been reelected by his caucus as the Senate minority leader for a second time.
