SOUTHERN MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Catholic priest who oversaw the operation of five parishes in Southern Michigan is under investigation after his sudden resignation.
Diocese spokesperson Vickie Cessna says the investigation was initiated after the Diocese of Kalamazoo noticed financial irregularities in mid-October.
Rev. Richard Altine had been the Dean of the Southern Deanery in the Diocese, managing churches in Decatur, Berrien Springs, Dowagiac, Buchanan and Silver Creek Township.
He mentioned medical and mental issues for his letter of resignation, saying he is “suspended from priestly duties.”
Cessna says they plan to keep the Parishes informed, but for now the investigation is in its preliminary stages.
