KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The League of Women Voters has been staging mock elections for years in area High Schools as an educational opportunity for students, who will be old enough to vote soon. Some already are.
They use real ballots and tabulators to make it as realistic as possible.
This week Superintendent Michael Rice reported that the results from the mock election at Loy Norrix was a lopsided sweep for the Democrats, while noting that he doubted that the student body was an accurate reflection of the voting public at large.
It’s not surprising but it is just a little disturbing that the largest vote total for any of the questions came in support of Proposal 1, the marijuana initiative.
Giving students a chance to practice with real ballots and using the real equipment certainly is an important lesson in the mechanics of the democratic process. The rest is up to them.
