WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) – President Trump signed bipartisan legislation into law on Wednesday backed by Republican Tim Walberg and Democrat Debbie Dingell in an effort to combat the opioid crisis.
Provisions were authored by the two Michigan Congressional members into Jessie’s Law and the Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act.
In addition, the bill includes a series of legislative solutions to enhance treatment and recovery programs, increase prevention efforts, direct more resources to communities, and fight the synthetic drug fentanyl.
Jessie’s Law was named after Jessie Grubb of Ann Arbor, who died of an opioid overdose in 2016. It will help ensure doctors have access to a consenting patient’s prior history of addiction.
The Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act will allow hospice professionals to safely dispose of drugs after a hospice patient’s death.
