PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo man is in serious condition after he got out of his vehicle and attempted to cross the freeway near Portage.
Public Safety officers were called to westbound I-94 near US 131 just after 7 a.m. Monday after reports that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
First responders later determined that the 33-year-old man was driving eastbound on I-94 when his vehicle stopped on the inside shoulder next to the barrier wall, but they’re unsure why he stopped.
He then attempted to cross northbound across the westbound I-94 lanes and was struck by a 2013 Ford Transit van driven by a 29-year-old man from Vicksburg.
The van driver was not injured but the pedestrian was rushed to Bronson Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
