EAST LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — It was a very good day for Wolverine fans.
Not only did they beat cross-state rival Michigan State in the “Backyard Brawl’ by a two touchdown margin, and returned to Ann Arbor with the Paul Bunyan Trophy, but they made a statement by shutting down the Spartan offence, holding them to less than 100 yards.
To put a cherry on it, they punched holes in the Green and White’s top ranked running defense.
Michigan’s Karan Higdon had 144 yards rushing on 33 carries.
It also got another monkey off their backs, snapping a 17-game streak of losses to ranked teams.
The University of Michigan is the victor 21-7.
There were a few injuries but no deaths, and a lot of hurt feelings, exactly what you would expect from the annual match-up.
And the news just got better after the Wolverines piled on the bus and headed home. #2 ranked Ohio State didn’t just lose to Purdue, they were embarrassed.
Purdue led the whole game and then scored 28-points in the fourth quarter to run away with it 49 to 20.
The Buckeye loss left Michigan alone atop the conference standings at 5-0.
It was a very good day indeed.
