KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo School Board got good news at their board meeting Thursday night.
They learned that the district has kept it’s streak alive for growing enrollment.
The student Population of 13,250 is the highest the district has seen since the 1980’s. They only added 15 new students this year so far, but they are up 25% since the introduction of the Kalamazoo Promise.
Because the state funds on a per-pupil basis, that means there will be a little more money in their checks from the state this year.
They also got a clean audit on their last fiscal year’s financial records.
Finance Director Gary Start says they go a few steps further than most other districts and have a comprehensive financial report done, for the sake of anyone interested in buying school bonds.
He says it may be a boring document for most people, but it’s fascinating for financial advisors looking for a safe place to invest.
He says if it shaves a few points off their interest rate it can save the district a considerable amount of money that they can put into projects.
