WINDSOR (WKZO AM/FM) — The work to build a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor is about to get underway.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday morning on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Governor Rick Snyder was on hand to make remarks, as was Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The project is estimated to cost $5.7 billion. The span will connect Interstate 75 in Detroit with Highway 401 in Canada, which runs through Toronto and all along southern Ontario.
The Canadian federal government is paying for the construction of the bridge, with Michigan to reimburse Ottawa through tolls collected in Detroit once it is completed and operating by the end of 2024.
