BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek man is dead, a woman is seriously injured and a person of interest is in custody for a possible assault and arson at a home in Battle Creek.
A medical unit was driving in the 300 block of North Washington Avenue near Parkway Drive around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when they spotted smoke coming from a home.
They quickly rescued the woman but saw another body inside the home that they were unable to get to because of the flames.
The 37-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital with broken bones, cuts, and burns.
Sgt. Todd Elliott says they were able to do a quick interview with the woman before she was loaded into the ambulance and she gave a description of a 47-year-old Battle Creek man.
Shortly after 10 p.m. the suspect turned himself in for the assault and arson.
Firefighters also recovered the body of who is believed to be a 64-year-old man, but his identity has not been confirmed.
A motive has not been publicly identified and no names have been released.
