KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A new Michigan law that gained momentum because of Kalamazoo’s biking tragedy has now taken effect statewide.
The new law requires that Michigan drivers give 3-feet of room when passing cyclists.
A ticket will mean a fine and up to three points off your license. The new law also requires that students taking drivers ed. courses spend an hour on pedestrian safety.
Kalamazoo, Portage, Grand Rapids, Oshtemo and Kalamazoo Township have all passed local ordinances requiring five feet be given to cyclists.
Those ordinances now will become unenforceable and the local jurisdictions will likely be revising their local codes to conform to the state law.
