BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek’s Fire Marshall is looking into a possible electrical fire that killed a cat and injured a firefighter as over a dozen of crew members battled the flames.
Firefighters were called to the 70 block of Fairview Avenue just before 8 a.m. Friday to discover all the residents outside and heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the home.
The homeowners told crews that two dogs, a cat, and a pet turtle were still trapped inside.
18 firefighters and two command officers moved in and quickly extinguished the blaze.
They rescued the two dogs and the pet turtle, but the cat did not survive the fire.
Investigators believe the fire may have started from the clothes dryer, but the exact cause is still unknown.
One firefighter received minor injuries when he slipped on the basement stairs, but he was able to continue working.
