KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools continue to beef up security measures to prevent and fend off the kind of school massacres that have shocked the nation.
Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice says they are putting staff through the ALICE program, which stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate.
It prepares them for a variety of security scenarios, some simple, but some severe.
In addition, West Michigan School districts are now using software called “FIRSTSight” that screens everything posted in the public domain for key words and notifies officials if something threatening pops up.
In the last few weeks, its detected online threats in both Kalamazoo Central and Portage Central that were defused before classes were interrupted.
