FULTON (WKZO AM/FM) — After Governor Snyder left they sexual assault conference at WMU Monday, he attended a ‘wild rice experience’ with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) in Fulton.
Wild rice was once a staple crop of the tribe in Michigan but invasive species and habitat destruction has reduced it to a few isolated beds.
So much so that it’s been designated as a threatened species in the state.
The tribe is working to reintroduce the native species to more areas.
They hope to preserve the seedlings and control the invasive plants that have threatened the wild rice which they say is important to their culture
