PARK TWP. (WHTC-AM/FM) —
Holland resident Mark Hekman spent Friday’s early morning hours in the hospital after a Park township single-car crash.
The 20-year-old fell asleep at the wheel just before 2 a.m. while driving southbound on Lakeshore drive, according to Ottawa County Sgt. Christie Wendt. His car ran off the road and hit a dead tree near the intersection with Perry
“The collision with the dead tree sent Hekman’s vehicle airborne,” Wendt said. “The vehicle then struck a cluster of trees and overturned, landing on its roof. The vehicle caught fire.”
Hekman scrambled out of his car, going by AMR Ambulance to Holland Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Wendt said alcohol is not a factor in the crash
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies, Park Township firefighters, and AMR Ambulance EMTs attended to the scene.
