KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s been a wish of animal lovers and Kalamazoo County officials for a long time.
The local animal shelter is small, cramped and generally not very hospitable for the animals, or for anyone coming in to adopt a pet.
County officials have been talking about replacing it for over a decade.
Today that work got a ceremonial send off with a groundbreaking.
The new facility will be built next to the current pound on Lamont Street. It will be more than twice as large with better sanitation, ventilation and healthcare facilities.
There will be rooms dedicated to the adoption process, to preparing food, an area for grooming, and a large area outside for exercise.
If all goes as planned, they should be snipping the ribbon on the $5-million facility next July.
