PARCHMENT (WKZO AM/FM) — Volunteer plumbers are continuing to install filters at homes on private wells in Parchment and Cooper Township.
WATER FILTER INSTALLATION:
Last week 109 kitchen faucet filters were installed and they plan to distribute 220 more to the homes in the area that have not yet been tested for PFAS, as a precaution.
Other homeowners on private wells who live within the 1.5-mile radius and are not on city water can have free bottled water delivered to their home until tests show the water is safe or a long term source of clean water is secured.
WATER DISTRIBUTION TOTALS:
The final totals are in from the bottled water distribution effort mounted by the community during the month after the discovery of PFAS in the water supply.
Health officials say local groups and individuals put in 3,115 volunteer hours at the distribution center, distributing around 32,800 cases of water.
WATER QUANTITY ISSUES:
The quality of the groundwater isn’t the only issue on the minds of elected officials, several County Commissioners would like to be briefed by the Drain Commissioner on the flooding situation in Kalamazoo County after Monday night’s heavy rain once again flooded downtown.
Commissioner Dale Shugars says high lake levels in Texas Township are threatening the taxable value of homes there.
Commissioner Julie Rogers says it appeared some property owners were taking matters into their own hands by pumping water out of their homes and connecting pipes across the street to do so.
Drain Commissioner Patricia Crowley has told us that the water table is abnormally high and the ground saturated due to heavy rain this spring and all it takes is a little more rain to cause flooding.
County staff says they will try to arrange for that briefing at the next meeting or the meeting after that.
